tails Up!
is a genetic kidney disorder seen with greater frequency in Basenjis than in any other breed. Left untreated, Fanconi affected Basenjis will die as major organs fail from lack of essential nutrients. |
And if your primary vet is not familiar with Fanconi Syndrome and the Gonto Protocol--most are not--you may face a costly, up-hill battle in getting your Basenji diagnosed and treated. Not all expressions of Fanconi Syndrome are alike. Some dogs respond well to the protocol and adapt to taking in excess of 20 pills a day.Other Basenjis may not be as adaptable, or they experience more acute symptoms and complications. Resistance to treatment/complications will severly shorten their life span. Additional side effects from the syndrome may include, but are not limited to, chronic urinary tract infections, incontinence, muscle wasting, and seizures. |

Thanks to the support of Fanconi research from concerned members of the Basenji Club of America (BCOA), research scientists at the University of Missouri have recently developed a genetic linkage marker test for Fanconi Syndrome and expect to have a direct gene test soon. If you currently own a Basenji and want to know your dog's DNA status, instructions on how to test are available at the Canine Phenome Project, and the Basenji Health Endowment Site. Because the DNA status of individuals impacts the overall health of the breed, results are public information and are available through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) website. |
Vigilance when looking for your next best friend will pay dividends not only to the longevity of your newest loved one, but to the long term health of the breed. Before you agree to purchase a puppy, search the health pedigree of the sire and dam at the OFA site using their registered names or numbers (URL link at left). Responsible breeders will only breed clear to clear, clear to carrier, or as a last resort, clear to affected. One parent must be DNA tested as a clear for the best odds that the puppy you are consdering will not become symptomatic of Fanconi Syndrome. If the parents have not been tested, ask that the puppy's DNA be tested before you commit or find another breeder. |

That's Tiger Pete above. He was symptomatic of Fanconi when he turned three and died at age six. Fanconi Syndrome can be eradicated from this breed forever with genetic testing and proper breeding practices. Do not purchase a puppy from any breeder who does not have a clear Fanconi test result on at least one of the parents and the documentation to back up those results. This disease will hurt your wallet, your heart, and most of all your dog. You can help end the heartache and pain by supporting breeders who use all available health testing. |
